Happy New Year
Dear All, Tiphereth wishes everyone a Happy New Year and we want to take this opportunity to thank everyone for all your support in the past year. We are all looking forward to an exciting 2011!
Update on severe weather
Dear Parents/Carers
We have been notified from City of Edinburgh that a majority of their transport should be able to go out on Monday, provided there is no change in the weather. The council website says “You should note that not everyone will be able to picked up, and some individual arrangements may need to be considered i.e. meeting the transport at the end of the street that you live. Whilst some parties think taxis are unaffected, transport are clear that they have a dialogue with drivers who say they will not pick people up from certain locations. Transport will pass onto units who they have not been able to pickup.”
In the meanwhile conditions at Tiphereth are much better today. The snow is melting fast and all buildings are accessible. Torphin road is also accessible by car. Number 10 bus route is not coming to Torphin yet but service may resume this weekend. Please check the Lothian Buses website for more information.
As things stand we will resume normal service on Monday13th December.
Update on severe weather
Dear parents and carers,
Please note that Tiphereth’s Day Service will be closed on Thursday 9th and Friday 10th of December. Please continue checking our website for updates. We apologise for any inconvenience caused by this disruption but the conditions in Torphin do allow us to provide a safe service yet.
Update on severe weather
Dear Parents and Carers,
Edinburgh City Council has just announced the closure of all their day service provision and voluntary day centres next week due to severe weather conditions. Therefore Tiphereth Day Service will be closed on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday in line with this update. Like Edinburgh City Council we will review the situation on Wednesday and make a decision about whether or not we can safely open on Thursday.
We looked carefully at the situation here at Tiphereth before making this decision in line with the council. There will be no transport provided by the council and therefore attenders could only arrive here by private vehicle. Currently the road is not accessible beyond the bus stop. Torphin house vehicles are parked down the hill beside the entrance to the golf club. The number 10 buses have still not managed to resume their service beyond Colinton Village. The extreme icy temperatures forecast over the next few days mean that this risky and difficult situation is unlikely to improve by Monday.
We very much regret the stress this situation must be causing. Staff at Tiphereth will be attending work to clear paths, help repair damage done by snow, and prepare workshops and work activities for the service opening. They will also be supporting the residential community.
Please contact us if you would like further updates on Monday or Tuesday, as the office should be open as usual.
Severe weather update
Dear Parents and Carers of Tiphereth,
This is just to update you on the situation at Torphin. A number of staff have managed to get here today, by walking from Colinton Village. The number 10 bus has not been able to get further than Colinton since Monday, and on some days only as far as Craiglockhart. Woodhall Road is open with a narrow passage way for vehicles, and it is possible to get a vehicle as far as the entrance to the number 10 bus stop. From there up the hill to Torphin there is a lot of snow on the road and although a tractor has left tracks to walk on, the road is not accessible yet.
Up at Torphin the snow is very deep, and we will be spending time today creating paths around the house and down the driveway. As you will imagine it looks stunningly beautiful, which is of course no comfort to you all when you need normal service resumed. The trees in the courtyard garden are laden with snow, and there are long icicles hanging from the windows. The Torphin House community is staying positive and busy, and has well stocked freezers, but they are starting to feel rather cooped up now, likewise at Kitezh and the Hollies.
We have phoned City of Edinburgh Council twice now asking for snow ploughs to clear the road right up to Torphin, and we are hoping this will be done today or tomorrow. They did in fact try to come up in the last hour but were blocked by a parked van, and we are contacting the council as I speak to ask them to try again, as we have managed to get the van moved. The council say their priority is hospitals and main roads.
Our intention is to be open on Monday. Staff can wait at the top of the road to support attenders who struggle to walk in icy conditions to get up the driveway and into the house. At the moment there is not a lot more snow forecast, but temperatures will be freezing. We have bought rock salt to ensure the paths we create will be as safe as possible. So the most vital need is to have access for vehicles right to the top of the road, and for travel conditions to allow staff to get here.
Please check the website on Sunday for updates. We are very aware that while this situation may be fun and unexpected holiday for certain people, it is extremely difficult and stressful for many of you having the routine you rely on so disrupted, and we will do our utmost to open the Day Service as soon as we can.
Snow Disruption
Tiphereth’s Day Service will remain closed till Friday 3rd December 2010. Weather permitting (it may not be possible for taxis and buses to drive all the way up Toprhin Road), Day Service will re-open on Monday 6th December. Please check our website for further updates.
